Induction Cooktop Installation in St George

Making the switch from gas to induction, or upgrading an old electric cooktop? Saints Electrical handles the electrical side: checking your switchboard, running a dedicated circuit and hardwiring your new cooktop so it's safe, compliant and ready to cook on.

Fixed-price quotes. Same-week availability for most jobs. Licence 399328C.

Switching to induction? Start with the wiring

Induction cooktops are fast, efficient and easy to clean. They also draw a lot more power than most kitchens were wired for. A full-size induction cooktop can't plug into a normal power point. It has to be hardwired by a licensed electrician, and it usually needs its own circuit straight from the switchboard.

That's the part most people only find out about once the new cooktop is sitting in a box on the kitchen floor. We'd rather you knew before you buy. Send us a photo of your switchboard and the cooktop's rating plate, and we'll tell you exactly what's involved.

Does an induction cooktop need a dedicated circuit?

In most homes, yes. Every induction cooktop has a rating plate (and a page in the installation manual) that tells you the maximum load it draws. Most full-size models need a dedicated circuit, commonly 32 amps, running directly from the switchboard.

In many older St George homes, the existing kitchen circuit is shared with the oven, rangehood or power points, and it simply isn't rated for an induction cooktop on top. Running a new dedicated circuit is the safe, compliant fix, and it means your cooktop won't trip the power when every zone is on.

We'll also fit an isolating switch near the cooktop so it can be safely switched off for servicing.

Check before you buy

Will I need a switchboard upgrade?

Not always, but it's worth checking before you buy. Your switchboard needs a spare spot for the new circuit breaker and enough capacity for the extra load. Older boards, especially ones with ceramic fuses or no room left, may need upgrading first.

Signs your switchboard may need attention:

✓

Old ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers

✓

No spare space for another breaker

✓

Power trips when the oven, kettle and air con run together

✓

No safety switches (RCDs) on your circuits

Replacing a gas cooktop with induction

Gas to induction is one of the most common kitchen upgrades we do. Here's how it works:

1

Gas disconnection

A licensed gasfitter disconnects and caps the gas line to the cooktop. We can coordinate this for you.

2

New circuit

We run a dedicated circuit from your switchboard to the cooktop, upgrading the board first if needed.

3

Install and test

We hardwire the induction cooktop, test every zone and make sure everything is working properly.

4

Compliance

You get a Certificate of Compliance for the electrical work.

If the cooktop is your last gas appliance, you may also be able to disconnect gas from your home altogether and stop paying the gas supply charge.

Before you buy your induction cooktop

A few quick checks will save you time and money on installation day:

✓

Check the rating plate. Note the maximum load in kW or amps, or send us a photo of the manual's electrical page.

✓

Measure your benchtop cut-out. Choosing a cooktop that fits the existing hole avoids benchtop cutting. Engineered stone benchtops have extra safety requirements if they need to be cut.

✓

Test your pots and pans. If a magnet sticks firmly to the base, it'll work on induction.

✓

Photograph your switchboard. Send it to us with the rating plate and we'll tell you what's needed before you book.

How much does induction cooktop installation cost?

It depends on what your kitchen already has. If a suitable circuit is already in place, it's a straightforward connection. If you need a new dedicated circuit, the cost depends on the distance from your switchboard and how easy it is to run the cable. A switchboard upgrade, if needed, is a separate job.

We'll look at your switchboard and kitchen first and give you a fixed-price quote before any work starts. What we quote is what you pay.

Induction cooktop FAQs

Do I need an electrician to install an induction cooktop?

Yes. A built-in induction cooktop has to be hardwired by a licensed electrician. If you're replacing gas, a licensed gasfitter also needs to disconnect the gas line. We can coordinate both.

Does an induction cooktop need its own circuit?

Most full-size induction cooktops need a dedicated circuit, commonly 32 amps, straight from the switchboard. The exact requirement is on the cooktop's rating plate. We'll check it against your existing wiring.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade for an induction cooktop?

Only if your switchboard has no space for a new circuit breaker or not enough capacity. Older boards with ceramic fuses often do. Send us a photo and we'll let you know before you buy.

Can I just plug in an induction cooktop?

Small portable induction cooktops plug into a normal power point. Full-size built-in induction cooktops can't. They draw far more power and must be hardwired to a suitable circuit by an electrician.

Can you replace my gas cooktop with induction?

Yes. A licensed gasfitter disconnects and caps the gas, then we run the new circuit and install your induction cooktop. We're happy to coordinate the whole job.

Do I need three-phase power for induction?

No. Most full-size induction cooktops run on standard single-phase power, as long as they have a suitable dedicated circuit.

Will my existing pots and pans work?

If a magnet sticks firmly to the base, yes. Cast iron and most stainless steel work well. Aluminium, copper and glass usually won't.

How long does installation take?

If a suitable circuit is already in place, connecting the cooktop is a quick job. Running a new circuit or upgrading the switchboard takes longer. We'll give you a realistic timeframe with your quote.
